As our country celebrates its Independence this Fourth of July – a number of organizations work to save one of the greatest symbols of our freedom. The UT College of Veterinary Medicine teams with other groups to provide medical care for the American Bald Eagle.

Dog Eye Exams

Police dogs are know for their amazing sense of smell. But their eyesight is also critical for them to perform their jobs. The UT College of Veterinary Medicine works with law enforcement to make sure K-9′s have healthy vision.


Veterinarians need sophisticated training to care for pets–especially in the area of internal medicine. But this can be hard on live animals because of the damage accidently done to their bodies during the teaching. Experts at UT’s College of Veterinary Medicine have invented a device to teach veterinarians to perform advanced procedures–without using live animals.

When you think about a veterinarian, images of treating dogs, cats and livestock come to mind. But UTs College of Veterinary Medicine also provides care at the home of hundreds of tigers, lions, cougars and other big cats.


When an elderly person is lonely, pets can help them overcome their sadness. UT’s College of Veterinary Medicine has a special program where pet owners take their animals to visit people in assisted living facilities.
